This detailed object is one of the many trinkets that was used by families all across Ireland throughout the seventeen hundreds. Families have many different uses for this item but the common tradition for families at the time was that the trinket was passed down through many generations showing that it was a staple to the culture there. This one in particular proves the tradition of passing down the “luck” as it becomes obvious that this is not a new item. The broken handle, deep scuffs, and the surface wear that is easily identifiable on the object gives a window into its past and how old it must be. Along with this, you can see the designs all around the object which is a common thing for these artifacts as the craftsmen took their time to pay attention to detail, especially putting clovers around the side which is an indication of luck in Irish culture. For many Irish families today, this is not just an object. It is a link to their past and a reminder of the traditions they uphold. The luck of the Irish is said to bring good fortune to the people who have it, bringing about an understanding of why families have kept it close for so many generations.
