Abstract

Drawing on the groundwork laid by decades of ecumenical dialogue between the Chalcedonians and the non-Chalcedonians, and by the Unofficial and Official Agreed Statements those dialogues generated, this thesis will argue that the Christological traditions of the Chalcedonians and the non-Chalcedonians are not irreconcilable. Without diminishing the real differences between the two traditions, this thesis will argue that those real differences — differences in terminology, priority, and emphasis — do not really amount to insurmountable differences in the faiths of the two sides, but rather to different approaches in articulating the same faith. More specifically, this thesis will trace the different ways that each side of the schism discusses and defends the dynamic relationship between unity and duality of the Divine and human natures in the one person of Jesus Christ.
