Abstract

Latin America has witnessed the rise, resurgence, and resilience of the left for decades. Thus, these pages examine the repositioning and revival of left-leaning leaders across the region. Since the early twenty-first century, Latin America’s electorate moved increasingly to the left. Nevertheless, the Cuban revolution set a precedent for leftist leaders to emerge in the 1950s. Hence, the project is divided into three volumes to provide a timely and interdisciplinary account of the Latin American experience with the left. Additionally, all three volumes contain personal interviews with Holy Cross faculty members who have ties to the following countries and events. Volume I focuses on the 1950s and the Cuban Revolution to explain its later influence in Latin America. It also includes a movie review portraying the early dreams of Ernesto ‘‘El Che’’Guevara. Likewise, volume II addresses how the left evolved in Latin America since the 1950s. To achieve this, the articles are centered on Venezuela and Hugo Chavez, one of the leading nations and individuals of the 2000s leftist movement. The volume also includes interviews with professors connected to Ecuador, another leftist country at the time. Lastly, volume III aims to explore the potential revival of the left through Colombia, a country where the left succeeded for the first time.
