John Peter Sullivan, SJ, was born on June 30, 1904 in Charlestown, MA. He entered the Society of Jesus at Shadowbrook in Lenox, MA, in 1924, following his graduation from Boston College High School in Boston, MA. He completed his novitiate and juniorate at Shadowbrook between 1924 and 1928. He then attended Weston College in Weston, MA studying Philosophy from 1928 to 1931, and Theology from 1933-1937. The year between his Philosophy and Theology studies was spent teaching Latin and Greek at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA. During his Theology studies he was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Thomas A. Emmet, SJ at Weston College on June 21, 1936. When he finished his Theology studies, he taught Latin and Greek at Shadowbrook for a year and then completed his Tertianship at St. Robert’s Hall in Pomfret, CT in 1939. At that time, he was assigned to the Jamaica Mission. While in Jamaica, he taught Mathematics at St. George’s College in Kingston. He then became the Director of the Cooperative and Credit Union Movement from 1940 to 1973. He was the first director of the Social Action Center in Kingston, Jamaica, serving from 1965-1970, and continuing as Assistant Director from 1970 to 1973. His work with the Social Action Center continued his involvement with cooperatives and credit unions. He returned to Massachusetts in 1973 because of health issues. He died at Glover Hospital in Needham, MA on February 26, 1975 at the age of 70. He had been a Jesuit for 50 years and a priest for 38 years. He is buried in the Jesuit Cemetery at Campion Center, the former Weston College, in Weston, MA.

The collection contains biographical material, diaries, correspondence, publications and one scrapbook. Much of the material is related to Cooperatives and the Credit Unions in Jamaica. The material dates from 1934 to 1995. The bulk of the material is from 1945 to 1970.
