Abstract

Inspired by her experiences as an American immigrant woman from Kenya, artist, Wangechi Mutu, creates multi-media collages meant to reclaim and reimagine the Black female body. Her composition of surrealist forms and fantastical landscapes is visually effective, while simultaneously drawing criticisms against destructive gender norms, Western beauty standards, and modern-day racism.
