Abstract

One of the most influential architects of the Italian Renaissance, Andrea Palladio (1508 - 1580) was also an influential archeologist of classical antiquity. In this thesis I examine Palladio’s design of the Redentore, a votive church built in 1577 on the island of Giudecca in Venice, in light of Palladio’s archeological reconstructions of the Imperial baths of Rome. Through imaginative experiment, Palladio drew upon classical and non-classical elements to create a contemporary system of architecture at the Redentore for sixteenth-century Venice.
