Abstract

This article recounts the entrepreneurial undertakings of two Irishmen, James Kavanaugh and Matthew Cottrill, who immigrated to the United Stated and settled in Newcastle, Maine where they established mercantile and timber businesses. Their business activity served as the foundation for an Irish Catholic community in mid-Maine during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century.
