Description
The Homeric epics were performed orally for centuries before scholars at the library of Alexandria created the first critical editions of the Iliad more than 2,000 years ago. Today, using high-resolution digital images, Holy Cross students are studying unpublished “footnotes” (called “scholia”) tucked into the oldest manuscripts of the Iliad, and are recovering the otherwise lost work of those ancient scholars. As part of this class, you will work in small teams guided by current undergraduates to find and decipher scholia in thousand-year-old manuscripts of the Iliad. No knowledge of Greek required
