Description

Though Pope Francis has often spoken of a short papacy, he is now in his fourth year and going strong in many ways. This talk both looks back at what he has done and said in his first three years, and where he may be headed henceforth. Special focus on mercy as the heart and soul of his understanding of who God is and of what the church and its members are called to be. Francis on mercy for the marginalized, the wounded, the alienated, the excluded, the refugee, the migrant, the poor, the sinner. Francis as a Jesuit priest, and as someone from Latin America. Francis as a prophet, as a reformer, and as an administrator. Francis as traditional in various ways and as committed to change. Review of his visit last September to the U.S. as indicative of his priorities and of how he works to achieve them.

Suggested reading: Pope Francis, The Name of God is Mercy (New York: Random House, 2016).
