Berth of the Abergavenny

Images Related to the Earl of Abergavenny (ship)

A collection of images related to the Earl of Abergavenny, an 18th century sailing vessel known as an East Indiaman. A replica of the ship, the only known model of an East Indiaman in existence, is on display in Dinand Library at the College of the Holy Cross. The actual ship is significant to literary history because it was the vessel captained by the brother of the Romantic poet William Wordsworth. It sank off the coast of England in 1805, killing 246, including Captain Wordsworth. This event greatly impacted Wordsworth's poetry, changing the course of his career.
