Abstract

This thesis argues that intelligence within Nature is a decentralized phenomenon characterized as Collective-Oriented Intelligence (COIN). Grounded in the philosophical framework of functionalism and the principles of weak emergence, the research posits that COIN arises specifically from the purposive interactions of individual biological intellects within a biocenosis. Unlike holist group mind theories that de-emphasize individual autonomy, this collectivist approach maintains the agency of the individual while identifying viability as the macro-emergent property of the entire system. Analyzing definitions of Nature, emergence, and models of collective intelligence contribute to identifying the necessary conditions required for COIN to emerge. Through an analysis of animals, plants, and fungi, the research demonstrates how local, independent-led interactions synthesize into a structured collective that outpaces individual capabilities. Ultimately, COIN serves as the essential functional property that facilitates self-organization and adaptation, ensuring the continued existence and viability of the biocenosis.
