Abstract

This study will chronicle changing perceptions of mental illness in America from the late colonial to the early national period, thematically addressing the transition from religious explanations of mental illness to the beginnings of the moral treatment.. Additionally, the reader will also be provided with a historiographical overview of the social history of mental illness and a discussion of the language of mental illness. A chapter on medical views of mental illness will conclude this study.
