Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

Abstract

Since the publication of Vivre me tue in 1997, Paul Sma"il's published statements about the necessity for a "Beur" writer to protect his dignity and his freedom behind a pseudonym have generated a significant layer of metafiction which this essay proposes to examine. An analysis of Sma"il's different types of narrative accounts will help us elucidate the cultural and literary effects produced by the writer's strategy.
