Abstract

In addition to following a similar argumental strand, the three books at which this story is aimed (Une enquete au pays, La Mere du printemps and Naissance a l'aube) bring forward in a constant way a set of formal, structural and thematic repetitions which allow us to consider them a trilogy. This work will be based on a study of these different constants which induce us to be aware of the fact that the three novels operate as a trilogy, especially if we look at the structure of the character system. Unlike the position of some critics who are content to notice a certain degree of likeness between the anecdotal level and the coincidence in the names of some characters in order to come to this conclusion, this study tries to bring out the internal functioning of these three books according to formal and thematic criteria. They deal with the exposition of only one conflict and the presentation of the same characters, though in different periods of history and different places. And all this is not only made clear on the level of the facts presented, but also within the tale. Finally, the dialectic between tradition and modern times is always underlying. Tradition is constant, represented by the same character, the Ait Yafelman, whose ultimate source is the notion of earth, the nourishing mother, whereas the elements of modern times change from novel to novel.
