Abstract
The past decade has seen an outpouring of documents calling for and offering recommendations for reform in school mathematics, and in particular, high school mathematics. Many of these changes are intended for the curriculum. These curriculum modifications presuppose that students learn, and thus teachers should teach, in ways that are completely transformed from what is practiced today. According to the proposed changes, students learn by constructing their own mathematical knowledge, and teachers must be informed guides to learning. The new secondary level mathematics curriculum supports these fundamental shifts in learning and teaching, and it opens the door to innovative classroom instructional practices. The method of cooperative learning with technology is a promising classroom technique that embodies these new ideas about learning and teaching mathematics at the high school level. Although further research is required, this technique may have a profound impact on the future of mathematics education.
