Abstract

This podcast examines the intricate relationship between food, nationalism, and identity, tied together through the ideas of gastronationalism and gastrodiplomacy. National dishes can often be a divisive topic, with several dishes around the world being claimed by multiple ethnic groups, often causing or fueling existing conflicts between them. Through analysis of historical context and modern-day events, this podcast aims to dissect the concept of “claiming” a food. With borscht as a case study, the listener is invited into the Slavic and Eastern European worlds to learn more about the great cultural nuance behind food that often affects modern-day happenings. This podcast synthesizes existing research on the topics of gastronationalism with primary sources to serve as examples. In the end, it argues that food both reinforces and transcends national and ethnic boundaries, providing insight into the ways food can strengthen one’s identity, yet also connect us across borders in unexpected ways.
