Description

The musical “sport” of change ringing involves a small group of people ringing large bells according to some prescribed pattern. To perform a legitimate piece of change ringing music (an extent), certain rules must be followed. For instance, the opening and closing pattern must be “rounds,” an ordering of the bells written as (1 2 3 4 ... n). Along the way, different orderings are played by permuting different pairs of bells. It is all quite complicated and difficult to master for the performer. However, mathematics can help us understand the patterns and simplify the process. We will “embody” the mathematics by physically dancing out the patterns as we ring some bells. This is not only really fun, it is an excellent way to learn the underlying mathematics.
