Department
Biology
Location
Smith Labs, Integrated Science Complex
Start Date

Description
The oceans cover 71% of the Earth’s surface, are responsible for the transfer of heat energy throughout the globe, control weather and climate, contain the majority of all life, yet most people are largely unaware of how important the oceans are in the proper functioning of our planet. This class will provide a primer on ocean function, as well as changes to function stemming from pressing issues such as global climate change, ocean acidification, ocean warming, sea level rise, plastic pollution, overfishing, and invasive species. A solid understanding of how the world ocean works and humanity’s association with it is fundamental to the appreciation, preservation, utilization, and protection of marine environments worldwide.
