Event Title

Renewable Energy: Can Wind and Solar Power Surpass Our Energy Needs?

Department

Chemistry

Location

Description

Technological advancements in the last twenty to thirty years have allowed the field of renewable energy to begin to thrive. One doesn’t have to look far to find wind turbines on the horizon or photovoltaic solar panels on rooftops or along the highway. Both technologies provide clean, renewable electrical energy without much reliance on fossil fuels. Yet, these sources of power are vastly underutilized. In this course, we will: explore the inner workings of wind and solar power, investigate how the turbines and panels are produced, trace the path of electrical energy generation, and experience both technologies in small- scale model systems. Finally, we will discuss if wind and solar power have what it takes to generate enough electrical energy to overcome our need for fossil- based fuels.
